Infrastructure and Budget Problems

As the infrastructure in the world begins to near the age in which it was designed to wear out it is necessary to make repairs. However most developing countries as well as developed countries have not planned for such repairs to existing infrastructure and in many cases it has been neglected. Because of these budgetary oversights it has become increasingly popular to use quick fix methods instead of using the proper repair and replacement methods. This patchwork will keep infrastructure usable for now, but in the long run it will end up costing more because restoration will no longer be possible. Complete replacement of infrastructure will always carry a heavier price tag when compared to proper repairs.

In a recent study of a Chicago restoration project it was found that the cost of replacement will far outweigh the cost of restoration done now. This will become a larger issue as major cities throughout the world begin to face these problems too. This issue has the potential to eat into the budgets for countries and cities at a time when many throughout are already facing fiscal problems. Many times the reason for this is that national and local budgets are only planned for the upcoming year so it is easy to overlook proper infrastructure procedures in order to free up money for other budget areas. The study of the Chicago restoration also revealed that using quick fix and patching methods to repair roads, buildings, sewer and other infrastructure sometimes actually ends up costing more money in the long run.

If this continues not only will we have a problem with roads and sewers, but there will also be an even larger problem because now the problem is worse.

How can this be fixed? The simple answer in a perfect world would be to correctly maintain and restore as needed instead of delaying these necessary and cost saving measures. However since many of the worlds governments have rules, regulations and sometimes even politicians that do not have everyone’s best interest in mind fixing these infrastructure problems is much harder. In order to allocate money for roads and other important structure it would have to be taken from another area of the budget or taxes raised. Both usually involve drawn out processes that are costly and time consuming due to all of the paperwork and time involved. So until the people begin thinking about their countries future past more than one year this problem will loom and eventually come crashing down.
