How London has Changed

Until not too long ago, London was best known for its old Victorian architecture. Old, dark streets, small, grimy buildings and dereliction in parts. Or alternatively the large and expensive Victorian city centre homes. Then came the new wave of buildings and a surge in construction of London apartment and hotel buildings as well as office blocks and although many are completely incongruous against the traditional buildings, they fit very well into the capital city's eclectic and bohemian style.

Take the Gherkin as an example. It shouldn't really work and yet it does, perfectly. Officially known as 30 St. Mary Axe, the unusual shape of this office block looks, well, just like a Gherkin, hence the name. It now stands as an iconic symbol of London and can be seen as far away as Windsor Great Park.

Then you have the London Eye, so much more than a mere observation wheel. Unlike some other structures built for the Millennium this one has not dated and remains as popular now as when it was first built.

Then of course there is the prestigious Canary Wharf development with the tallest building in the United Kingdom, One Canada Square AND the second tallest buildings, 8 and 25 Canada Square.

London is now seen as one of the cutting edge cities in design and architecture as this cosmopolitan city develops beyond all recognition.
