Climate Strategies for New Construction

One of the biggest challenges facing existing structures is climate control. Whether residential or commercial, existing structures are limited by several factors. The first is that existing climate system infrastructure is often limited by the design of the building. Second, a building's ability to retain temperature often impacts the overall effectiveness of a climate control system. Construction materials are also a common cause of climate retention in existing construction.

In most European countries, the concern is heating. However, when dealing with geographies outside of Europe, the design challenges quickly shift toward air conditioning . In many geographies, including some European countries, the design must balance both heating and cooling requirements.

Air conditioning is the process of removing humidity from air and circulating it through a structure to create a cool climate. The ability for a climate control system to do this is largely dependent on the structure's ability to retain that cool air. In most residential structures, this is achieved through insulation that keeps the cool air in and barriers that keep sun's rays out. If a structure is not designed to optimize both insulation and barriers, the climate system will not be efficient. The result is that it will work harder, consuming more resources, and will not produce optimal climates.

Other design elements such as large windows in commercial buildings can be compensated by air ducts that create a curtain type barrier preventing heat from coming in. Though not as efficient as a solid, insulated wall, this is one technique used to help balance beauty and efficiency.

In the end, both heating and cooling technologies have gotten very sophisticated. Still, implementing these technologies in existing structures can be challenging. If you have the luxury of designing and constructing a structure from the ground up, take advantage of the opportunity to get the climate control system right. To the extent that you do it right, it will save you money and is good for the environment.
